LESSON 6 · CHOOSING A PLATFORM · 2 MIN READ

How to test coverage in a cloud security platform trial

Short answer

Connect the same accounts to each platform on the same day, time how long the first full inventory takes, and check it against your own map and a few known findings you planted. Coverage is one of the few things in a CNAPP trial you can measure directly, so measure it.

Pick the accounts

Choose a slice of your estate that has every environment and workload type on your map: at least one account in each cloud you run, one Kubernetes cluster, some serverless functions and, if you have them, an on-premises segment. Use the same slice for every platform.

Plant known findings

Before connecting anything, place a few findings you can recognize:

  • A VM with an outdated package that has a published vulnerability.
  • A container image with a test secret in a file.
  • A storage bucket with public read access in a non-production account.
  • An identity with broader permissions than it needs.

Each platform should find each of these. A miss is a coverage gap, and you know exactly where it is.

Measure, do not estimate

Record for each platform:

  1. Time from granting access to the first complete inventory, in hours.
  2. Share of the workloads on your map that appear in the inventory, by workload type.
  3. Which planted findings appear, and how long each took.
  4. Which workloads needed an agent before they showed any depth.

Vendor timing claims are a starting point, not a result. Orca states that SideScanning "deploys in minutes"; Upwind states its live inventory is "refreshed every 30 seconds". Your own numbers, on your own accounts, are what you can defend.

Run them in parallel

Connect every platform on the same day so that the estate is the same. Agentless platforms can run side by side without touching workloads. For sensors, pick the same small group of hosts for each.

Score the trial with your own weights

Put the measured results next to this site's scores and adjust the weights in the coverage calculator to what the trial taught you. Then stack up the two or three platforms left and read their head-to-head pages for the criteria the trial did not test, such as pricing and integrations.

What a coverage trial does not tell you

It does not show how well alerts are handled in production, how the vendor supports you, or how the platform scales to your full estate. Those need references and a longer pilot.
